Regina Pats News Release
Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats ' (34-20-5-4) third period offense helped book themselves a ticket to the post-season after they sunk the Moose Jaw Warriors (26-32-4-1) 6-2 at the Brandt Centre.
Majority of play in the first half of the opening frame was in the Warriors end, but it was the visitors with the edge on the shot clock, 4-0. With 3:31 left in the stanza, Pavel Padakin split the Warriors ' defense for breakaway and was interfered with by Dustin Perillat. The forward never got the shot off, so he was awarded a penalty shot. When Padakin broke in one-on-one with Warriors goaltender Brody Willms, he pulled a classic Jussi Jokinen style goal, scoring one-handed to put the Queen City Kids up, 1-0. Jack Rodewald ' s goaltender interference penalty, and Spenser Jensen ' s double minor for high sticking gave the Blue and White a lengthy five-on-three powerplay, which was interrupted by the conclusion of the first 20 minutes of the contest. After one, the Pats led 1-0 on the scoreboard and trailed 7-6 in shots.
The Warriors stymied the Pats ' man advantage in the second, and eventually the game returned to five a side. Adam Brooks and Reid Zalitach sat a pair for some extra-curricular activities behind the play. While four-on-four, the Warriors stormed in two-on-oh, and Pats defenseman Chase Harrison came back to try and break up the play. Nonetheless, the puck still got to a wide open Jesse Shynkaruk, but Daniel Wapple challenged the shooter and made a clutch pad save. Overall, the second frame was strong for the Blue and White as they generated 14 shots to the Warriors ' nine. As well, they killed off a penalty which allowed Padakin ' s penalty shot marker to remain the difference maker after 40 minutes.
Brett Howden took no time to tie the game up for the Warriors. The forward out-waited Wapple and slid the puck into the back of the cage with only 1:29 gone in the third. Rykr Cole put the home back ahead, though, when he scored his eighth of the season about 45 seconds later. Torrin White responded for the Warriors after he buried a pass from Howden. The scoring parade continued when Colby Williams rushed up the boards and spotted Braden Christoffer backdoor to make it 3-2 in favour of the Pats. Padakin added some insurance when he scored again, this time not on a penalty shot, but when he found the loose biscuit and potted it over a sprawling Willms. Jesse Gabrielle broke the game wide open after he scored on the powerplay with help from Padakin to put the Pats ahead by three. Brooks tallied a late empty net goal, which was more than what the home team needed as they downed their Highway One rivals, 6-2.
The Pats have a four day break before they return to action Friday night when they travel to Edmonton to battle the Oil Kings in an 8:00 p.m. CST puck drop. Tune in with Home Depot Pats Hockey on 620 CKRM or WHL Live Web TV.
