Cougars Outlast Clinton in 12 Innings

CLINTON, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars won a 12-inning marathon Saturday night against the Clinton Lumberkings at Alliant Energy Field, taking home a 6-5 victory in a 4-hour, 9-minute game. Justin Frash scored the deciding run on a wild pitch, which was part of the Cougars' third two-out rally in the game. The Cougars have now won eight of their last 10 and are 14-7 in August.

The Cougars trailed, 2-0, entering the sixth inning. Their starter, Scott Hodsdon, allowed two runs in five innings and was on the hook for a loss, but Jake Smith roped out a two-out double to score Larry Cobb, Shane Keough singled home Petey Paramore in the seventh to tie it and Adam Klein scored on an error to make it 3-2. Then reliever Chad Kerfoot allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth for a 3-3 score, and it remained through nine innings.

In the 10th Greg Dowling notched a sacrifice fly, and Matt Ray connected for an RBI single to put the Cougars ahead, 5-3, but Leonardo Espinal (5-3) served up a pair in the bottom half for another tie, 5-5. Espinal became the winning pitcher after Frash come home on a wild pitch in the 12th from Fabio Castillo (2-4). Frash and Dowling had posted consecutive two-out singles to set up the game-deciding run, and Lance Sewell grabbed his second save by getting the final three outs.

The Cougars (30-31) go for a four-game sweep against Clinton (30-31) on Sunday afternoon at 2 CT. Tyson Ross (0-0, 5.11) will face Blake Beaven (9-6, 2.50) before the Cougars continue their eight-game road trip Monday night in Beloit.
