Lansing Lugnuts News Release

Fort Wayne, Ind. - Every time the Lansing Lugnuts dented the scoreboard Saturday night, the Fort Wayne Wizards had an answer. They used those answers to upend Lansing 3-2 at Memorial Stadium.

Lansing broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth when Jonathan Jaspe reached on a walk and later scored on C.J. Ebarb's single to center field, making it 2-1.

Yet in the bottom half of the frame, the Wizards struck back to take the lead, using a controversial call to turn the tide. Lance Zawadzki tipped a strike three into the mit of catcher C.J. Ebarb. Ebarb appeared to bobble the baseball while transferring it from his glove to his hand, but the home plate umpire ruled that he never controlled the ball, allowing the at-bat to continue.

Zawadzki took advantage of the extra strike by lacing a double into left field to start the rally. Justiin Baum followed with a single and Adam Zornes drove home Zawadzki with a double down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2. Baum would score on Yefri Carvajal's fielder's choice, putting the Wizards on top 3-2.

The two teams had traded runs in the first inning, but the starters took over for the next four innings.

Wynn Pelzer made the start for the Wizards but did not receive a decision. He hurled five innings and gave up just one run.

Instead Omar Gutierrez (1-1) notched the win, as he was one of four Fort Wayne hurlers to be used out of the bullpen.

Jackson Quezada picked up his 26th save of the year by tossing a 1-2-3 ninth.

Luis Perez (5-11) suffered the loss for Lansing. He lasted five innings, but gave up all three runs to Fort Wayne as he did not record an out in the sixth before being pulled.

Lansing (72-59, 33-28) and Fort Wayne (67-64, 30-31) will conclude their eight game stretch against each other Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
