Cougars Outfielder Nabs Midwest League Post Season All-Star Honors
August 24, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Midwest League announced today that Kane County Cougars outfielder Javier Herrera has been selected as the sole Cougar to be named a post season All-Star. Currently on the disabled list with a left wrist strain, the twenty-year old appeared earlier this season in the Midwest League's Midsummer Classic along with teammates third baseman Myron Leslie and catcher Raul Padron.
No stranger to receiving special recognition, the Northwest League tagged Herrera the 2004 Player of the Year, and this season the Venezuelan played on the World squad in the Future's game as part of Major League Baseball's All Star Festivities in Detroit, Michigan. Named one of the top prospects in the Oakland Athletics' minor league system,
Herrera appeared in 88 games for the Cougars prior to landing on the DL, hitting .278 while producing 94 hits. Slugging thirteen long balls, Herrera has driven in 61 teammates thus far in the 2005 season. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2001, Herrera emerged in the professional baseball arena that season in the Dominican Summer League (Rookie) and spent the following year in the Arizona Rookie League. Collecting three NWL Player of the Week (6/20-6/27, 7/19-7/25 & 8/16-8/22) and July Player of the Month honors with the Short-A squad in 2004, the league MVP slugged a .331 batting average with 12 home runs and 47 RBI.
Currently in a chase for the wildcard, the Kane County Cougars are keeping it exciting at Elfstrom Stadium this Labor Day weekend. Beginning tomorrow, the team embarks on an eight-game road trip, landing in the Quad Cities (August 25-28) and Battle Creek, Michigan (August 29 - September 1) for two crucial four-game sets against the Swing and Devil Rays. The squad returns home to Geneva on Friday, September 2 to an action-packed four-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Class A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). Bringing the 2005 regular season to a climatic conclusion, the weekend series has much in store for fans, as three of the four games will feature post-game fireworks. Great giveaways will be handed out, autographs will be signed, bases will be ran and Myron Noodleman, Skydivers and the ZOOperstars each make one final visit.
