Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva IL - The Kane County Cougars defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 8-5 on Sunday, putting themselves either one win or a Beloit loss away from the making the playoffs for the ninth time in their 15-year history and sixth time in seven seasons. Nick Blasi had three hits and scored two runs to lead the offense, and Ryan Ford won his 14th game of the year, tying him for most in the league.
Eddie Kim smacked a two-run homer in the first inning off Kernels starter Fernando Rodriguez for a quick 2-0 lead, and after Cedar Rapids got one off Ford the next inning, Tommy Everidge delivered another two-run round-tripper for a 4-1 game. Then Cliff Pennington reached on an error and stole second before Nick Blasi walked. Travis Buck singled to score Pennington, and the relay throw got into the dugout to bring in Buck for a 6-1 affair. Blasi drove in David Castillo in the fourth to build a 7-1 advantage.
The Kernels fought back with one in the fifth and two in the sixth to chase Ford from a 7-4 game. The left-hander gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked two and fanned two in his five-plus innings. Jared Trout retired the next nine Kernels in succession, allowing just a home run in the ninth in four innings of relief. Kane County's final tally had arrived in the sixth on Pennington's single. Ford (14-7) beat Cedar Rapids for the second time this season and eliminated the Iowa foe from playoff contention. Trout notched his second professional save, and Rodriguez (8-10) suffered the defeat for the Kernels. The regular-season finale is Monday afternoon at 2 CDT, as Trent Peterson (3-2, 3.30) attempts to pitch the Cougars (36-33) into the playoffs against Karl Gelinas (10-8, 4.06) for Cedar Rapids (34-35). The Cougars would host game one of a playoff series on Wednesday night at 6:30 CDT if they qualify.
