Lugnuts use big inning to top Whitecaps, 6-2

September 4, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- Josh Lex collected a two-run double that highlighted a five-run second inning as the Lugnuts(70-68, 33-36) knocked off their arch-rivals, the West Michigan Whitecaps (72-67, 39-30), winning by a 6-2 score on Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park in front of 3,455 fans. With the win, the Lugnuts guarantee themselves a winning season and also a winning record against the Whitecaps.

Ryan Klosterman's RBI double in the second opened the scoring in the five-run frame and brought home David Hicks, who had doubled to start the inning and had moved to third on a groundout by Aaron Mathews. After a single by Yuber Rodriguez, Lex followed with his double to score Klosterman and Rodriguez and make it 3-0. Juan Peralta delivered an RBI single to plate Lex and Jason Armstrong followed with an RBI single to plate Peralta.

That would be plenty of offense as it turned out for the Lugnuts pitching corps. Jordan Timm (2-0) started and got the win for Lansing, allowing a pair of runs in five innings while striking out seven. Timm allowed an RBI sacrifice fly to Nick McIntyre in the third and a wild pitch in the third brought in Brooks Colvin with the other run for West Michigan.

Jordy Templet followed Timm's efforts with three shutout innings that came with a pair of strikeouts and Joey McLaughlin retired the side in order in the ninth to complete the three-hit masterpiece. West Michigan did not collect a hit after the third inning.

Jeff Hahn(4-2) started and took the loss for the Whitecaps, allowing seven hits and five runs in six innings. However, Hahn allowed only one hit after the second inning outburst. Lavon Lewis worked a pair of innings and allowed an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Klosterman that scored Eric Nielsen in the eighth inning.

The Lugnuts complete their 2005 season tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. as they send right hander Russ Savickas to the mound. West Michigan will counter with right hander Josh Rainwater.
