Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Dayton Dragons (28-39, 59-79) used an eighth inning comeback on Saturday to pick up a 5-4 come from behind win. Fort Wayne Wizards (26-42, 64-74) starting pitcher Brent Carter (W, 2-0) and the FW bullpen made certain there was not a repeat performance of game two of the series as the Wizards knocked off the Dragons 7-0, ending the Dayton winning streak at three games.
Carter was the story for the Wizards on the night, tossing 6.0 innings of shutout baseball. The left hander, making just his second start in the Midwest League, gave up three hits while striking out eight and walking only one. Adam Rosales was the only Dayton hitter to advance as far as second base against the Fort Wayne starter. In two appearances covering 12.0 innings with the Wizards, Carter has allowed only one run and seven hits. He has struck out 13 and walked one.
The Wizards got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning against Dragons starter Juan Frias (L, 1-5) Matt Lauderdale led off the inning with his tenth homer of the season and second of the series. The solo shot to right center gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead.
The home team added to the tally with a five run sixth inning. Four of the five runs in the inning were charged to Frias, while the other was put on the line of Zac Stott (ND). Josh Alley's RBI single made it 2-0 FW. After the first four Wizards batters reached base to open the inning, Frias was lifted in favor of Stott. Stott allowed an RBI single to Matt Thayer, an RBI single to Chase Headley and a two RBI single to Mike Baxter. After the sixth, Fort Wayne extended the lead to 6-0.
The Wizards picked up its final tally in the bottom of the eighth off James Avery (ND). The fourth Dayton error of the night and second on Bradley Key put Yordany Ramirez on base. Following a walk and a wild pitch, FW had runners at second and third for Lauderdale, who delivered his second run batted in of the night with a single to center. The hit scored Ramirez and gave Fort Wayne a 7-0 lead.
Whether it was the starter Carter or the bullpen, the Dragons did not have an answer for Wizards pitching on Saturday night. Neil Jamison (ND) and Matt Varner (ND) came in out of the pen and retired the final nine Dayton hitters of the night. Jamison set down six in a row over the seventh and eighth and Varner blanked the Dragons one-two-three in the ninth to preserve the shutout.
The Dragons and Wizards wrap up the final four game series of the 2005 regular season at Memorial Stadium on Monday afternoon with a 3:00 PM first pitch. RHP Carlos Bohorquez is scheduled to start for the Dragons in the final game of the series and of the 2005 season. Fort Wayne will send RHP Joel Santo to the mound. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast the game live, beginning with the pre game show at 2:30 PM.
