Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays moved to within one game of first place after a 4-1 vicory over the Swing of the Quad Cities and a West Michigan loss at Lansing Sunday afternoon at C.O. Brown Stadium.
The Devil Rays stellar starting pitching continued as the team won its fourth consecutive game behind six innings of one-run ball from Jino Gonzalez. Gonzalez used seven strikeouts, two hits and one walk for the victory. Tony Perez, Chris Mason and Richard De Los Santos each added scoreless innings to seal the win.
Southwest Michigan now sits just one game behind West Michigan for the Eastern Division second half crown. While both teams have qualified for the postseason, the Rays hold the tie-breaker over the Whitecaps if both teams are even. The top seed will face Fort Wayne in the first round while the wild-card winner will square off with South Bend.
Offensively, the Rays used RBIs by Reid Brignac, Chris Nowak and Shaun Cumberland to gain a 2-1 lead after four innings and add two more runs in the eighth. Fernando Perez stole his league-leading 56th base in the eighth inning. The steal ties the franchise record set by Jason Maule in 2001.
The team topped 100,000 in attendance for the first time since 1999 with a paid crowd of 3,717.
The Devil Rays will start Eddie De La Cruz on Monday against Matt Scherer for the Swing. The 2:05 p.m. game is Fan Appreciation Day which features the team's second Used Car Giveaway promotion as well as winning one night with Rays GM Martie Cordaro as your chauffeur.
