Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva IL - The Kane County Cougars needed either a win against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday or a Beloit loss against Wisconsin, and neither scenario occurred. The Cougars lost 5-0 in front of 6,119 fans at Eflstrom Stadium on the final day of the regular season.
Trent Peterson tossed six innings and suffered the tough-luck loss. Peterson and Kernels starter Karl Gelinas were locked in a pitcher's duel for the first four innings before a home run by Jordan Renz and run-scoring single by Greg Dini put Cedar Rapids ahead 2-0. Peterson left after giving up the two runs (one earned), serving up six hits, walking none and fanning six. J.R. Pickens replaced the left-hander, allowed a round-tripper in the seventh and then got charged for another run when Derek Tharpe gave up a two-run homer in the eighth to complete the scoring, 5-0.
The Cougars (36-34) managed only five hits for the game, two of which came from catcher David Castillo. The eighth inning marked the only time Kane County had multiple baserunners in the same inning. Peterson (3-3) took the loss, and Gelinas (11-8) tossed a complete game for the victory.
Kane County finished the regular season one game shy of the postseason, only the second time since 1999 they didn't make the playoffs.
