Dragons end 2005 on winning note with 5-3 victory

Fort Wayne, IN - The Dayton Dragons (28-39, 60-79) were looking to finish the 2005 season on an up note, the Fort Wayne Wizards (26-42, 64-74) were looking for a final tune up before opening the Midwest League Playoffs on Wednesday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Dragons strung together a productive top half of the third picking up five runs on seven hits on route to winning the 2005 season finale.

Neither team could muster any runs in the first two innings of baseball. Both the Dragons and Wizards put two runners on in the first inning but the starters: Joel Santo (L, 4-11) of Fort Wayne and Carlos Bohorquez (ND) were able to get out of the mess with no damage done.

The Dragons bats came to life in the third as the club grabbed a 5-0 lead. After Jeremiah Piepkorn lined out to center for the first out go the inning, Dayton picked up five consecutive hits off Wizards starter Joel Santo (L, 4-11). Tonys Gutierrez single and was knocked in by Adam Rosales with a double to left for a 1-0 Dragons lead. Cody Strait gave Dayton a 3-0 lead with a two run homer to left center, his 14th of the season. Bobby Mosby made it 4-0 with a mammoth home run to left center that completely left the ball park. Mosby's fourth dinger of the season also gave the Dragons back-to-back homers for the third time in 2005. Jordan closed out the scoring in the third off Santo with an RBI double that scored Chris Kroski with the fifth run of the inning.

The Dragons were cruising heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning limiting Fort Wayne to just a pair of hits on the afternoon. Bohorquez, the Dayton starter lasted 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and no runs on the day with four strikeouts and one walk. Joe Powers (W, 2-0) retired six of the seven hitters he faced in his 2.0 innings of work, allowing a fifth inning walk to Josh Alley.

After a scoreless sixth inning, his first inning of work, Omar Segovia (ND) got himself into trouble in the seventh inning with walks. A one out walk to Yordany Ramirez and a hung curve ball with two down and Matt Thayer crushed the offering over the wall in left field for a two run homer. With a 5-2 lead, Segovia walked his second hitter of the inning and extended the frame for Drew Davidson who knocked in Peter Ciofrone and the lead was cut to 5-3.

Dayton got shutout innings in the eighth and in the ninth inning to close of the Wizards and pick up the win. Alexander Farfan (ND) allowed one hit in the eighth but did not allow a run turning the ball over to Aaron Garrison (SV, 1) in the ninth to close the game out. Garrison allowed a lead off single to Ramirez before tossing a double play ground ball to eliminate the lead off man. A two out base hit by Thayer and a wild pitch moved the runner at second base but Garrison got Ciofrone to hit a come backer to the first base side of the mound ending the game and preserving the 5-3 win.
