Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
BELOIT, WI -- Johnny Woodard hit two homers and drove in three runs, David Winfree hit a homer and drove in four runs, and the Beloit Snappers beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field. The win, coupled with Kane County's loss means the Beloit got into the Midwest League playoffs on the last day of the regular season as the second half Western Division Wild Card. The Snappers and Rattlers will meet in the first round of the playoffs, starting with game one on Wednesday in Beloit.
Beloit (69-71 overall, 36-34 second half) got out to the lead when Woodard hit a home run to start the Beloit half of the third inning.
The Snappers got another run in the bottom of the fifth inning by stringing together three straight singles. Winfree drove in his 98th run of the season with the third single in the sequence.
Wisconsin (76-63, 37-32) got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Beloit starting pitcher Eduardo Morlan gave up a hit and a walk to the first two batters of the inning. A groundout moved both runners up a base. Morlan was replaced by Josh Hill. Wisconsin got their first run of the game on an RBI ground out by Mike Wilson, but the tying run was left stranded at third.
Morlan got the win by going 5-1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits, and striking out seven.
In the bottom of the sixth, Woodard hit his second home run, a two-run shot, to push the Snapper lead to 4-1.
Beloit put the game away in the bottom of the eighth with a two out rally. Rattler reliever Ivan Blanco got the first two outs, but walked the next three batters. Winfree was at the plate and Blanco threw a wild pitch that allowed a run to score. Then, Winfree hit a three-run homer deep to left.
The Rattlers begin a best-of-three first round playoff series on Wednesday back at Pohlman Field. Mark Lowe is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kyle Asleton is believed to be the scheduled starter for the Snappers. Game time is 6:30pm.
Game two of the first round playoff series is Thursday at Fox Cities Stadium. It is a "Bang for Your Buck" Night with sodas, hot dogs, and beer for $1. Tickets are still available. You can order tickets by calling 733-4152 or 1-800-WI-TIMBER. The Timber Rattler ticket office opens at 9:00am on Tuesday.
