
Cougars Lose to Chiefs in 11 Innings

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars rallied for five runs in the fifth inning on Thursday night to take their first lead, but the Peoria Chiefs eventually re-tied the game and beat the Cougars, 9-6, in 11 innings at Elfstrom Stadium. The three-game series is even at one game apiece, and the Cougars still have a three-game lead over Clinton for the top playoff spot in the Western Division with 24 games left in the regular season.
The Cougars trailed, 4-0, when they managed a run in the fourth on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Orlando Calixte. Then they batted around during a five-run fifth. Angel Franco scored on a throwing error, Cheslor Cuthbert had a sacrifice fly and Brett Eibner, Jake Kuebler and Calixte had run-scoring hits to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 lead. Mike Giovenco yielded a run in the sixth, and Alex Rivers gave up a homer to Richard Jones in the seventh as the Chiefs drew even, 6-6.
The tie score remained until the 11th when the Chiefs mustered three runs against Chas Byrne (3-3). The Cougars had missed opportunities to win the game in both the ninth and 10th innings, and Peoria took advantage in the 11th. Yohan Gonzalez (5-4) earned the win, and Daniel Berlind posted his fourth save. Starter Yordano Ventura allowed three runs in three innings in a no-decision. The Chiefs outhit the Cougars, 14-12, and every Cougars pitcher gave up at least one run.
The Cougars (27-19, 55-60) and Chiefs (19-27, 52-64) conclude the three-game series Friday night at 7 CT. Jason Adam (5-6, 4.39) will take on Eric Jokisch (8-3, 2.94). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 p.m.
