Kernels Held To Four Hits In 2-0 Loss To Clinton

CLINTON, Iowa - The Kernels offense was held to four hits as Clinton shut out the Kernels 2-0 at Alliant Energy Field on Wednesday evening. The final 14 Kernels batters were retired by Clinton pitching and the Kernels final hit of the game came in the fourth inning.
Clinton plated the first run of the game in the third inning when Mickey Wiswall singled home Julio Morban, giving the LumberKings a 1-0 lead. The LumberKings pushed their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Anthony Phillips crushed a solo home run to left field off of Kernels starter Justin La Tempa.
La Tempa (2-7) started and took the loss for the Kernels. He went four innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked three. Beau Brooks went two innings in relief and allowed no runs on one hit. He struck out three and walked one. Tyler Kehrer also went two innings in relief. He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out one and walking none.
Taijuan Walker (6-5) started and picked up the win for Clinton. He went five innings and allowed no runs on four hits while striking out three and walking one. Walker then handled the ball to the bullpen, and the combination of Ryan Kiel and Tyler Burgoon did not allow a base runner the rest of the way. Kiel went three innings and struck out three. Burgoon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 12th save.
Rolando Gomez led the offense for the Kernels, going 2-4 with a double. Travis Witherspoon and Jeremy Cruz both singled.
