South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Walks hurt the South Bend Silver Hawks bullpen corps on Thursday night, with two batters who reached on the free pass providing the difference in the 3-1 win for the Lansing Lugnuts at Coveleski Stadium.
With a 1-1 tie in the seventh, South Bend reliever Keith Cantwell (LP, 1-2) issued back-to-back walks to Oliver Dominguez and Matt Nuzzo and a single to Jack Murphy to load the bases. Victor Capellan (ND) entered from the bullpen, but allowed a RBI single and a sacrifice fly as the Lugnuts rallied for the win.
Lansing's first run scored against starter Mike Bolsinger (ND) when Marcus Knecht hit a solo homer in the first inning. That was the only blemish for Bolsinger who went six innings and struck out a season-high eight batters. Bolsinger also retired the final 14 batters he faced, lowering his ERA to 2.93 on the year.
South Bend scratched out their only run in the third inning with back-to-back singles by Roberto Rodriguez and Niko Gallego, followed by an Ender Inciarte sacrifice fly.
One day after having a hit from all nine in the starting lineup, the Silver Hawks were held to only six hits on Thursday night - all singles. Gallego was the only Silver Hawks regular to record a multi-hit game with two singles and two stolen bases.
Lansing reliever Dustin Antolin (WP, 2-1) picked up the win with two scoreless innings, and Danny Barnes (SV, 10) recorded the final six outs for the save.
The series wraps up on Friday evening with a Friday Fireworks celebration at 7:00 PM Eastern Time at Coveleski Stadium. RHP Jeff Shields (7-10, 4.35 ERA) will start for South Bend against Lansing's LHP Egan Smith (5-5, 3.66 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
