Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Thanks to a five-out save from closer Logan Nissen, the Kane County Cougars held on for a 4-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Thursday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.
With the Cougars (4-2) leading 4-2 in the top of the eighth inning, Nissen entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. After a sacrifice fly by Chris Burgess cut the Cougars lead to one run, Nissen induced a groundout to end the eighth. In the ninth inning, Nissen worked around a lead-off walk by striking out Javeyan Williams and inducing two groundouts to end the Railcats (2-4) rally and earn his second save of the season.
The Railcats jumped out to an early lead against Cougars starter Vance Worley (1-0). After three singles loaded the bases, Tom Walraven grounded into a fielder's choice to score Javeyan Williams and make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Cougars bats went to work against Railcats' starter Aaron Phillips (0-1). Nick Anderson led off the frame by doubling into right-center field. Following an Alexis Pantoja groundout, B.J. Lopez crushed a two-run homer over the left field fence to give Kane County a 2-1 edge.
After Gary tied the ballgame in the top of the third on an RBI single by Alec Olund, the Cougars took the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth. Dylan Busby led off the frame with a double before a single by Pantoja and a walk by Lopez loaded the bases. Galli Cribbs Jr. then delivered a bloop single to left to put the Cougars back in front 3-2.
The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Following back-to-back singles by Lopez and Cribbs, Erine De La Trinidad knocked a single into right field, scoring Lopez to make it 4-2 prior to Gary's late rally.
Kane County will hit the road for the first time this season, beginning with a three-game series at Sioux City on Friday night. Right-hander Jack Fox (1-0) will take on fellow right-hander Tyler Beardsley (1-0). The Cougars return to Northwestern Medicine Field for a six-game homestand beginning Friday, May 27th.
