Cougars Give Up First Place, 3 - 2

Geneva, IL –The Kane County Cougars dropped the opening game of a four game series to the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a final score of 3 – 2. The Kernels hit two solo home runs in the top of the ninth inning and moved all alone in to first place in the Western Division standings in front of a crowd of 4,045 at Elfstrom Stadium.

Cougars drew first blood in the bottom of the fifth after Luis Perez tripled to right and Brian Ingram singled to center scoring Perez giving Kane County a 1 – 0 lead.

Cedar Rapids tied the game with a run in the top of the 7th when Sean Rodriguez scored from second on a two out single. Starter Jose Corchado was lifted in the inning after allowing just one run on five hits and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

The Cougars threatened to score in the bottom of the eighth inning, loading the bases with two out but a ground out ended the inning.

The Kernels scored two runs in the top of the ninth on two solo home runs by Sean Rodriguez and Matt Pali, the latter proved to be the winning run and gave Daniel Fyvie his first loss of the season.

The Cougars again would make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth when catcher David Harriman slammed his first home run of the season over the left field deck to make it a one run game. Luis Perez walked with two outs and was stranded after a ground out to end the game. The Kernels move into first place in the Western Division with the win, the Cougars to second place, just one game behind Cedar Rapids. All three of the Cougars losses have been by just one run.

The Cougars and the Kernels will play game two of the four game series tomorrow at 2:00. The Cougars will send right-hander Jared Trout to the mound looking for his first win of the year and face right-hander Michel Simard.
