COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The 2004 season at Fifth Third Ballpark started out with a bang — literally. In the team's first at bat, Vince Blue homered to right field on the first pitch. Blue's hit started a trend that would continue through the game as the Whitecaps went on to win the home opener nine to four over Battle Creek.

Blue's homer wasn't the only one of the game. Kelly Hunt hit one for the 'Caps in the bottom of the third, adding three runs to the score. Before the end of the game, Hunt would drive in two more runs on single in the bottom of the fourth. Pitcher Virgil Vasquez scored his first win, going six innings and giving up four runs while striking out six.

New manager Matt Walbeck and the rest of the 2004 team scored their first home win in front of a record breaking crowd of 10,667. Friday night's crowd broke the old home opener record from 1997 by more than 2,000 fans.

Game two of the series is slated for Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. start time. The Yankees will be in town through Monday. On Tuesday, the South Bend Silver Hawks will visit Fifth Third Ballpark for four games.
