Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA â The Burlington Bees hadn't scored more than three runs in any of their first seven games. Tonight, the bats exploded for eight runs and ten hits and beat the Swing of the Quad Cities 8-5 at Community Field tonight.
The Bees scored in the first inning for the first time as Walter Sevilla reached and went to second on an error by Dusty Gomon and then stole third and scored when the throw went into left field to give the Bees a 1-0 lead.
Bees' starter Jake Mullis (1-0) retired the first nine men that he faced, before running into trouble in the fourth. Denard Span led off with a bunt single and went to third on Mullis' throw that was wide of first. Alex Garcia followed with a triple to drive in Span and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Brock Peterson to give the Swing a 2-1 lead.
The lead didn't last long as the Bees re-tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Sevilla led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Adam Donachie. The Bees took the lead for good in the fifth. Swing starter Errol Simonitsch (0-1) walked Brian McFall to start the inning. McFall stole second and went to third as Jeff Barry reached on an error as Simonitsch couldn't pick up the ball in front of the mound. Jon Uhl replaced Simonitsch and gave up an RBI single to Angel Sanchez, a sac bunt to Sevilla, and an RBI single to Bryan Graham giving the Bees a 4-2 lead. The Bees scored four more times in the sixth on an RBI single by Barry, an RBI double by Sanchez, a sac fly by Sevilla, and another RBI single by Graham.
The Swing got three runs in the top of the ninth against Steve Bray, who took over for Mullis in the seventh. An error by Sanchez in the middle of the inning made two of the three runs unearned. John Gragg took over for Bray with runners and the corners and two outs and struck out Garcia to end the game and picked up his first career save.
The Bees and Swing continue this series tomorrow night at 6:00 at Community Field. LH Dusty Hughes (1-0, 0.00) makes his second start for the Bees after eight no-hit innings in his debut on Monday night. RH Adam Harben (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Swing. The gates open at 5:00 for Family Night and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
