Kane County Cougars News Release
BELOIT, Wis. - The baseball had trouble staying in Pohlman Field on a hot sticky Saturday evening as the Cougars (7-2, 52-27) connected on four home runs in a 10-2 victory over the Beloit Snappers (2-7, 32-47). Kyle Schwarber connected on his biggest professional day yet with five RBI and a pair of home runs.
Jacob Hannemann started off the Cougars offensively with a single and then stole second base. After Ben Carhart flied out, Hannemann attempted to swipe third, but was thrown out for the second out. Schwarber kept the inning alive and allowed Yasiel Balaguert to put the Cougars ahead with a two-run blast over the left field wall.
The home runs kept coming as Schwarber connected on a solo shot in the third inning. Jacob Rogers contributed with a two-run dinger of his own. Rogers' team-leading eighth round-tripper of the year gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Balaguert stayed hot with a run-scoring double in the fifth for the only run that didn't score on the long ball.
Then Kyle Schwarber opened up the game in the seventh. With a new pitcher on the mound in Trevor Bayless, the Cougars loaded the bases with a walk, single and a Carhart groundball that turned into an error. After watching two out of the zone, Schwarber connected for his first professional career grand slam sending one over the right field wall. Schwarber became the first Cougar to homer twice in a ballgame this season and made it a 10-1 lead.
The Snappers' runs came as solo home runs by Luis Baez and Chih-Fang Pan.
The pitching staff also was a big contribution to Saturday's win as Duane Underwood (2-2) tossed five innings of one-run baseball allowing just two hits and striking out five for the win. Michael Heesch allowed one run in two and two-third innings before Zak Hermans closed out the ballgame retiring the final four hitters.
Kyle Finnegan (6-5) suffered the loss being charged with six runs in six innings.
The series continues on Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch from Pohlman Field. Jen-Ho Tseng (3-0, 2.35) gets the nod for the Cougars against Beloit's Matt Stalcup (0-3, 5.46). The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
