Whitecaps Top Hot Rods for 3-1 Win
June 28, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Comstock Park, Mich. - For a second consecutive night, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) were unable to overcome solid pitching by the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers), as starter Buck Farmer helped lead a 3-1 victory for West Michigan.
Farmer (7-5), the Midwest League strikeout leader, allowed the lone Hot Rods run on six hits over six frames. He added six strikeouts to his tally and received the win. Joe Mantiply picked up where he left off by hurling three scoreless frames to earn his sixth save of the season.
Bowling Green starter Ben Griset (0-4) was very good as well. Griset threw a career-high seven innings, and allowed just three runs on four hits. Two of those hits left the yard, and it was enough for the Whitecaps. Josh Kimborowicz made his Hot Rods debut out of the bullpen, and he worked a scoreless eighth inning.
The Whitecaps got on the board in the first with one run. Wynton Bernard led off with a single through the left side, and moved to third base on Javier Betancourt's single. Raph Rhymes grounded into a fielder's choice to drive home Bernard and put West Michigan in front.
The 1-0 lead lasted until the top of the fifth when the Hot Rods tied the game. Darryl George, Pat Blair, and Alexander Simon each collected singles to load the bases. With one out, Juniel Querecuto grounded out to second base to advance home Blair.
Willie Adames drove Friday night's lone run, and he led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left-center field to give the Whitecaps back the lead, 2-1.
That advantage was extended with another lead-off homer in the seventh. Jeff Holm homered to right field to conclude the night's scoring, as it gave the Whitecaps the 3-1 lead.
Despite the loss, Querecuto collected two hits and a run batted in to raise his batting average to .284.
The Hot Rods and Whitecaps will play game three of their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for Noon central, and fans can follow the action on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket beginning at 11:45 a.m. CT with the Pepsi Pre-Game Show. The Hot Rods return home on July 4, highlighted by a double-fireworks show following the game. For tickets and more information, fans can visit BGHotRods.com or call 270-901-2121.
