Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Grant Fink's sacrifice fly to center field brought in Paul Hendrix from third base to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning as the Lake County Captains defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Saturday night. A crowd of 8,841 saw the game at Fifth Third Field.
The Captains game-winning rally began when Dragons reliever Alejandro Chacin issued back-to-back walks to start the ninth inning. Torsten Boss grounded out slowly to Chacin to move the runners to second and third, and Fink followed by driving a ball in the air to center, easily deep enough to allow Hendrix to tag and score to break the tie.
The Dragons got a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth from Jose Ortiz, but the game ended when Jonathan Reynoso hit a ground ball to third base that was fielded by Hendrix, who tagged Ortiz for the final out.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run to left field by Jon Matthews, his first of the year. Lake County scored in the third to tie it at 1-1.
The Dragons jumped back ahead in the fourth when Tanner Rahier doubled off the left field fence, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. The Captains tied the game in the fifth on a solo homer by Claudio Bautista.
The Dragons had chances to regain the lead with runners at third and one out in both the sixth and eighth innings, but in both cases, Lake County pitchers were able to get a key strikeout for the second out and then work out of the jam.
Dragons starting pitcher Jackson Stephens went the first four and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two runs with one walk and four strikeouts. Scott Brattvet turned in an outstanding relief appearance, tossing three and one-third innings, allowing just one hit and no runs with a walk and four strikeouts. Chacin (4-3) allowed one run in one inning to suffer the loss.
The Dragons collected eight hits. Ortiz and Daniel Pigott each had two.
The Dragons (2-7) host Lake County (7-2) in the third game of the series on Sunday at Fifth Third Field at 2:00 p.m. Amir Garrett (2-4, 4.38) will start for the Dragons against Lake County's Caleb Hamrick (2-3, 6.66). The series concludes on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
Notes: The game was delayed by rain for 61 minutes prior to the start of the second inning.
