West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps blasted a pair of home runs and pitched another gem on Saturday night, treating a season-high crowd of 9,021 to a 3-1 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (5-4, 46-33) has limited Bowling Green (3-6, 35-43) to just one run through the first two games of a four-game set that continues with day games on Sunday and Monday.

The 'Caps struck first on Saturday night with a run in the opening frame. After singles by Wynton Bernard and Javier Betancourt put runners at the corners with nobody out, Raph Rhymes drove in his team-leading 39th RBI with a fielder's choice groundout that plated Bernard for a 1-0 lead.

Bowling Green briefly tied the score in the top of the fifth on a bases-loaded groundout by Juniel Querecuto that made it a 1-1 game.

But the Hot Rods were unable to score again, and the temporary deadlock did not last long.

Leading off the bottom of the fifth, 18-year-old prospect Willy Adames jumped on an 0-2 fastball and hammered it beyond the left field fence to break the tie. Two innings later, Jeff Holm led off the seventh with a tape-measure home run to right that gave the Whitecaps a 3-1 lead.

Meanwhile, All-Star pitchers Buck Farmer (7-5) and Joe Mantiply (6) allowed just one run over nine innings to deliver West Michigan another low-scoring win.

Farmer started and worked six strong innings for the victory, limiting the Hot Rods to one run on six hits - all singles - and one walk. Farmer struck out six to increase his league-leading strikeout total to an even 100 and induced a pair of groundball double plays.

Mantiply took over in the seventh and tossed the final three innings, retiring nine of the 11 batters he faced for the save.

Ben Griset (0-4) was the tough-luck loser for Bowling Green, allowing just four hits without issuing a walk over seven sturdy innings. Two of the four hits were home runs, however, and he was charged with three runs in the loss.

The Whitecaps continue their seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. RHP Austin Kubitza (6-1, 2.53) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against LHP Chris Kirsch (3-5, 3.59) of Bowling Green on a Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day featuring a special appearance by WGVU's Curious George. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps' front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
