Kane County Cougars News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - Held down to only five hits, the Kane County Cougars were shutout for the first time this season as they fell to the Burlington Bees in a 4-0 final at Community Field on Wednesday night.
Aaron Newcomb (1-1) limited the Cougars (14-15) to three hits over six innings of work. Only two Cougars even reached second base while Newcomb was on the hill as Willson Contreras got there with one out in the fifth after a walk and a single. Dan Vogelbach doubled in the sixth, but the Cougars were unable to punch either man home.
Burlington (11-16) was able to grab the advantage in the bottom of the fourth against Pierce Johnson (1-2). Kyle Johnson singled to start the frame and scored on a base hit from Wade Hinkle. Johnson almost held the Bees to that one tally but with two outs, Wendell Soto cracked a three-run double to put the Bees up by four.
Johnson only lasted four frames while Justin Amlung and Matt Iannazzo each tossed two scoreless innings out of the Cougars' bullpen. Cam Bedrosian (S, 1) recorded the final nine outs for the Bees as he fanned four including the last two hitters of the contest.
The Cougars and Bees battle in game two of their three-game series on Thursday night at 6:30. Right-hander Tayler Scott (1-1) starts for the Cougars against lefty Ryan Crowley (2-0). The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday, May 14, when they take on the Peoria Chiefs at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com .
