Great Lakes Loons News Release

FORT WAYNE, IN - Alberth Martinez drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning Wednesday afternoon on a ground ball to third scoring Brian Adams from third and giving the Fort Wayne TinCaps a 6-5 win over the Great Lakes Loons in front of 7,434 youthful fans at Parkview Field. The TinCaps led 3-0 in the contest then had to rally after the Loons scored five in the seventh.

Gabriel Quintana's first inning RBI single gave Fort Wayne an early advantage in the game. The TinCaps brought two more runs across the plate in the fourth inning on consecutive RBI singles by Corey Adamson and Adams.

Meanwhile, the Loons were struggling to get anything going offensively against Fort Wayne starter Joe Ross, who limited the Loons to just two hits and four total base runners in the first six innings. But in the seventh, Ross hit Jeremy Rathjen to lead off the inning. He then surrendered singles to Corey Seager and Tyler Ogle to load the bases.

Then with one out, Dashenko Ricardo appeared to injure his wrist. Pinch hitter Jesus Valdez inherited an 0-1 count and singled in the Loons' first run. Paul Hoenecke followed with a two-run double to tie the score at 3-3. Later in the inning with Genison Reyes on in relief of Ross, Kevin Taylor knocked a two-run double off the first base bag to give the Loons a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Loons reliever Miguel Sulbaran retired the first two batters he faced. But he walked Jeremy Baltz, surrendered a double to Quintana, and gave up a two-run triple to Luis Tejada to tie the score at 5.

Adams led off the ninth with a fly ball to left field off Sulbaran that Taylor appeared to lose in the sun for a double. Rodney Daal bunted him to third. Then Stephen Carmon walked on a close 3-2 curveball to put runners at first and third with one out. With reliever Sawil Gonzalez on the mound, the next batter Martinez hit a soft grounder to third. Hoenecke's throw home was late and Adams scored the game-winning run.

Sulbaran (2-1) was charged with three runs (all earned) in 2 1/3 innings and took the loss. Loons starter Ralston Cash struck out seven in six innings, allowing four hits and three runs (all earned).

Roman Madrid (3-0) took the win with a scoreless top of the ninth. Ross was charged with all five Loons runs (all earned) in 6 1/3 innings after throwing six scoreless frames.

The Loons and TinCaps continue their three-game series tomorrow evening at 7:05pm. Right-handed pitcher Jharel Cotton (1-1, 3.32 ERA) is slated to start for the Loons. The TinCaps are scheduled to go with left-hander Max Fried (1-0, 3.79). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.

The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
