APPLETON, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars are still in the second-half playoff race, now just half a game out of the wild card race after a 7-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The Cougars have won four in a row and 12 of 15.
The Cougars' win, combined with Peoria's win over Cedar Rapids, tightened the playoff race. In order to qualify for the post-season, the Cougars need to win their three remaining contests and hope that Peoria and Cedar Rapids split their final two games.
Starter Henry Rodriguez (6-8) pitched a career-high seven innings and gave up one run on six hits, walked two and struck out eight for his first win since August 2. Then reliever Nick Walters struck out five over the final two innings.
The Cougars knocked out 16 hits and scored in the first inning for the fourth straight game. Greg Dowling's first-inning RBI-single brought home Josh Horton for a lead the Cougars never relinquished. They added two in the second, one in the third, two more in the seventh. Then after Wisconsin's only run of the game arrived in the seventh, the Cougars countered in the eighth. Every Cougar had at least one hit, and Dowling, Todd Johnson and Gustavo Rosendo had three apiece.
The Cougars (38-29) and Rattlers (29-38) will play a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at 1:05 CT. Travis Banwart (2-1) and Scott Moore (1-4) are scheduled to handle the starting roles.
