Doubles and walks doom Whitecaps in Lansing

LANSING - Charlie Furbush suffered his first loss as a Whitecap by giving up four runs in the first inning of a 7-4 loss to Lansing. With the defeat, West Michigan has lost back-to-back games for the first time since August 3 and 4.

Furbush recovered to pitch five innings without allowing any additional runs, but reliever Kelvin Cedano gave up three runs in three innings during which he walked six batters.

The Lugnuts clubbed seven doubles, including two by Paul Franko who drove in four runs. It was Franko that capped the first inning rally with a three-run double.

West Michigan left 12 runners on base while Lansing stranded 13 and each team racked up 11 hits.

Brian Pettway went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for the Lugnuts.

The West Michigan offense was led by Ryan Strieby, who led off the second inning with his 16th home run of the season. He finished 2-for-4 and also had an RBI single in the third.

Michael Bertram was 2-for-5 with a triple and a double.

Whitecaps pitchers issued a season-high nine walks. The second most walks issued by West Michigan this season is seven, occurring twice and both in games against Lansing: April 9 and June 26.

Jim Dougher made his Lansing debut as the starting pitcher, but faced only two batters before he left the game with an injury. Four Lugnuts relievers combined to finish the game.

West Michigan must win the final two games of the set to avoid losing the regular season series to Lansing.
