Costly Errors Spark Tri-City Sweep of Brooklyn

TROY, NY- September 1, 2015--The Brooklyn Cyclones overcame a four-run deficit on the road before losing the lead for good in the eighth and dropping a 5-4 ballgame to the Tri-City ValleyCats on Tuesday night. Four costly Brooklyn errors paved the way for Tri-City to take an early lead and never fall behind, completing a three-game sweep of the Cyclones for the second straight season at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. After going 9-20 in August, Brooklyn begins September with a third consecutive loss. They head into the final seven games of the season at 31-38, needing to win every contest in order to reach .500.

The ValleyCats began the evening capitalizing on Brooklyn's mistakes. After two singles and a double steal to begin the bottom of the first, they had runners at second and third with nobody out. An RBI groundout from Aaron Mizell put Tri-City on top before a throwing error on Vinny Siena would bring another run in. A third would cross after an infield singled was compounded by a throwing error on Cyclone starter Raul Jacobson, allowing Bobby Wernes to score. At the end of one, the ValleyCats led 3-0.

Tri-City extended their lead in the third after a stolen base sandwiched between singles left runners at the corners with one out. Yet another Brooklyn error, an errant throw from first baseman Zach Mathieu, allowed Alex Melendez to score and give the home team a 4-0 advantage.

As it turns out, Brooklyn was down but not out as they staged a two-out rally in their next at-bat. The top of the fourth began with an out before Siena walked and Jeff Diehl singled. After the second out, Brandon Brosher added a single of his own to load the bases. The stage was then set for centerfielder Desmond Lindsay, who collected his first three RBI since joining the Cyclones with a bases-clearing double, bringing Brooklyn within one. Hengelbert Rojas followed with an RBI single to score Lindsay and draw Brooklyn even at 4-4.

Adam Whitt threw a scoreless fifth despite two Cyclone hits before Scott Weathersby ( 3-1) came on in relief for Tri-City in the sixth and eventually got the win. Over three innings, Brooklyn didn't record a hit off Weathersby while the right hander struck out five Cyclones.

On the other side, Jacobson competed all the way through his first start as a Cyclone despite the miscues. He ended his night allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. The right hander had seven strikeouts and walked none over five innings of work.RHP Craig Missigman tossed two hitless innings of relief in the sixth and seventh, walking two and striking out two.

In the bottom of the eighth with the game tied at four, RHP Corey Taylor took over for Brooklyn. A leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt left Brooks Marlow at second for the ValleyCats. After striking out one pinch-hitter, Taylor walks a second one with a wild pitch, allowing runners to be at the corners with two out. Melendez delivered hit second hit of the game and gave Tri-City a 4-3 lead with just one at-bat left for Brooklyn. Taylor (L,1-1) allowed a run for only the second time this season and eventually got tagged with his first loss of the season.

In the ninth, Yeyfry Del Rosario tossed a perfect ninth to finish the job, striking out the side. Del Rosario's first save of the season cemented a 5-4 win and series sweep. The Cyclones finish the season 2-4 against the ValleyCats.

Next up, the Cyclones travel to Connecticut to face the Tigers in the final road series of the season. The four-game set begins tomorrow at 6:05 PM when RHP Eddie Villasmil takes the mound for Brooklyn in Game 1 of a double header. In Game two, it will be RHP Jose Celas on the mound for the Cyclones. The Cyclones return home for their final home series of the regular season on Saturday, September 5th when they take on the rival Staten Island Yankees.
