Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners got timely hitting and Bobby Poyner came on to shut down a Hudson Valley Renegades in both the eighth and ninth as the Spinners avoided a three-game sweep with a 6-5 win Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
Hudson Valley (36-33) got on the board in the top of the second inning after a lead-off double from Manuel Sanchez. After a passed ball moved him to third a base hit from Garrett Whitley gave the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (35-35) took the lead in the third inning with a two-out rally. Tyler Spoon got things started with a walk, moving to third on a double by Victor Acosta. Josh Ockimey followed with a two-run single to give Lowell a lead. Ockimey advanced to second on a throwing error by Jose Paez and came around to score when Kyri Washington followed with a double to left to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Renegades got a run back in the top of the fourth after a lead-off double by Hector Montes was followed by a base hit from Sanchez to pull the Renegades within one.
The Spinners added to their lead in the sixth inning after three straight base hits to lead off the inning loaded the bases. Austin Rei walked to score one and Tate Matheny plated another with a force out. A Jeremy Rivera force out plated a third and staked Lowell to a 6-2 lead.
Hudson Valley pulled within a run in the eighth on a three-run home run by Sanchez, who tormented the Spinners all night long, off Logan Boyd, but Bobby Poyner came in to close out the eighth and close out the Renegades in the ninth for a 6-5 win.
Four Spinners had two-hit games, led by Ockimey and Washington, who drove in two and one runs respectively. Tucker Tubbs and Chad De La Guerra also had two-hit nights.
Dioscar Romero (3-3, 3.91) picked up the win with five strong, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk, striking out three. Boyd was charged with three runs on four hits and a pair of walks, striking out four over two-plus innings. Poyner picked up his 10th save, allowing one hit while striking out one in two innings.
The Spinners now head to Aberdeen for a three-game set with the IronBirds. Austin Glorius will get the ball to start the series with a 7pm first pitch.
