Staten Island Yankees News Release
After taking the first two games of the series, the Staten Island Yankees (36-33) couldn't complete the sweep of the Connecticut Tigers (32-34), dropping the series finale, 8-4.
Connecticut took control of the game in the first frame. Staten Island starter Derek Callahan (L, 5-4) issued back-to-back walks immediately followed by a three-run blast from Joey Havrilak, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Staten Island got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Zack Zehner led off the inning reaching on a one of Connecticut's five errors. Jeff Hendrix then grounded into a fielder's choice, reaching first base as Zehner was out at second. Hendrix managed to get himself in scoring position, stealing second and reaching third on another Tiger error. Trey Amburgey brought home the first run of the game for the Yankees, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 3-1.
Connecticut put up two more runs in the third inning. Patrick Mackenzie drew a walk then scored on a Jose Zambrano double to left field. Zambrano scored later in the inning on a Havrilak ground out, extending the Connecticut lead to 5-1.
In the bottom of third, Amburgey continued to impress with another home run to left field, cutting the score to 5-2.
Alex Bisacca came out of the bullpen for Staten Island in the fourth inning, but that didn't stop the Tigers from scoring more. After walking Steven Fuentes and Jacob Kapstein, Zambrano brought home two more runs with a single to right field, extending the Tigers' lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Staten Island put another run on the board. Kevin Cornelius and Junior Valera collected back-to-back singles, allowing Cornelius to score later in the inning on a wild pitch by Connecticut reliever Ryan Milton (W, 1-0).
Yoel Espinal came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning for Staten Island. Corey Baptist hit a leadoff single then reached third on a wild pickoff attempt by Espinal. Shane Zeile brought Baptist home with a double, giving Connecticut another insurance run.
Staten Island was able to add another run to the board in the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Baby Bombers fell, 8-4.
The Yankees play their final home series of the regular season against Tri-City beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m.
