'Cats Break out the Brooms on Brooklyn
September 1, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Scott Weathersby pitched three innings of hitless baseball and Johnny Sewald drove in the go-ahead run to secure the 'Cats a 5-4 victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones on Tuesday night, completing a three game sweep.
With the victory, the 'Cats improve to 39-30 on the season, 4.5 games ahead of the Lowell Spinners in the Stedler Division with just six more regular season games remaining. The magic number for the 'Cats to clinch their 4th Stedler Division title in a row falls to three.
The 'Cats got on the board early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Aaron Mizell, and consecutive singles by Bobby Wernes and Dexture McCall.
A Cyclones throwing error in the bottom of the third allowed the fourth 'Cats run to score, putting them on top of the Cyclones 4-0.
Alex Winkelman got the start for the 'Cats and breezed through the first three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three Cyclones.
He ran into trouble in the fourth, however, beginning with a walk to Vinny Siena. Jeff Diehl followed up with a single, and after striking out Zach Mathieu, allowed a single to center by Brandon Brosher to load the bases with two outs.
Then, Mets 2015 2nd round draft pick Desmond Lindsay delivered the big blow by lining a double down the right field line to clear the bases and cut the deficit to just one run. Hengelbert Rojas followed with a single to score Lindsay, knotting the game up at 4-4.
From there, the 'Cats bullpen shined. Adam Whitt pitched a scoreless fifth inning, then Scott Weathersby threw three masterful no-hit innings, striking out five, and most importantly, giving the 'Cats offense a chance to win the ballgame.
That time came in the bottom of the eighth. Brooks Marlow led off with a single to right, and Cesar Carrasco executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to put the go-ahead run in scoring position with just one out.
Following a strike out by pinch-hitter Kolbey Carpenter, Romero went to the bench once again, bringing Anthony Hermelyn to the plate. He battled through the at-bat, working the count full and walking on a wild pitch by Cyclones reliever Corey Taylor, which moved Marlow to third.
With the go-ahead run just 90 feet away, Johnny Sewald came to the plate and delivered the biggest hit of the night for the 'Cats, a two out RBI single through the hole just out of the reach of Cyclones second baseman Vinny Siena. The hit gave the 'Cats a 5-4 lead.
Yeyfry Del Rosario came on to strike out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, to earn his first save of the year, completing the series sweep of Brooklyn. Weathersby earned the victory with his performance, improving to 3-1 on the year.
The ValleyCats now head to Staten Island to face the Yankees for three games, before returning home to finish the 2015 regular season campaign with a three game set against the Connecticut Tigers.
On the bump Wednesday for the 'Cats will be Harold Arauz (0-4, 6.14 ERA), opposite RHP Domingo Acevedo (2-0 1.93 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. ET at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, and can be heard online at tcvalleycats.com, through the MiLB Inside the Park & First Pitch apps, as well as TuneIn Radio.
