Corvallis Knights E-News

February 23, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release

Our countdown toward the 2011 season - already our fifth in Corvallis, can you believe it - is now in double-digits and the June 3rd opener at Walla Walla and the June 7th home opener against the Klamath Falls Gems are growing closer by the day.

Do you have season tickets Have you purchased your reserved season tickets, 10-game punch card or our new 15-game reserved punch card We averaged a franchise-record 1,000 fans per game last year; we want to absolutely crush that mark this summer and we can't do it without your help.

Coach Knight Leads Perth to ABL Title

Our very own skipper Brooke Knight coached the Perth Heat to a 2-1 victory over Adelaide 7-1 in the best-of-three Australian Baseball League`s championship series earlier this month. Perth lost the opener, and then won two in a row to take the title.

Perth finished in second place in the regular season and defeated regular-season champion Sydney 2-0 in late January to advance to the championship series. Adelaide then eliminated Sydney to earn the other spot in the finals, which were played at Barbagallo Ballpark in Perth.

Adelaide won the opener 4-3; Perth then won the second game 9-2 to force a decisive third game. Former Knights/Linn-Benton Community College pitcher Liam Baron (2008-2009) finished the second game.

"We did what you have to do to win," Knight said. "We got three very good starts, we played some outstanding defense, the bats came alive and we peaked at the right time."

Congrats to Brooke, Liam and the boys. Brooke will return for his fourth season as the Knights' coach this summer.

WCC Honors Kyle Kraus of UP

University of Portland junior pitcher Kyle Kraus, a standout on the 2009 and 2010 Knights` staffs, was named a preseason West Coast Conference all-star in a vote of the coaches.

Kraus was 5-1 with a 1.75 ERA in an injury-shortened 2010 season, and 6-2 with a 2.04 ERA in 2009. He was a first-team WCL both years.

Big West Cites Three Knights

Three future Knights are ranked in Baseball America`s list of the Top 10 newcomers to the Big West Conference.

Righthanded pitcher Chase Johnson of Cal Poly is ranked No. 5 and Mustangs' infielder Jimmy Allen is ranked No. 7. UC Riverside lefty pitcher Dylan Stuart is ranked No. 8.

And lots of former and future Knights and West Coast League players are mentioned in Baseball America's numerous preseason "best of" lists, which can be viewed by clicking here.

Dillard, Hunter Honored

Two former Knights who played significant roles on the 2009 and 2010 Western Division title teams were honored this week for great performances with their respective college teams. Another mainstay from the 2010 team was nominated, but wasn't selected.

Senior outfielder Daniel Dillard (2010), a Western Oregon senior, was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week. He hit .500 (9-18) and had a homer, a double, five RBIs and six steals in three wins.

Shortstop Taylor Hunter (2009) of George Fox University was named the Northwest Conference Player of the Week. He hit .642 (9-14) with three three-hit games as the Bruins went 3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference/Northwest Conference Challenge at Wilsonville High School.

Hunter, a junior from Canby, Oregon, had a .714 slugging percentage, a .625 on-base percentage, and a game-winning RBI single against Concordia.

And Long Beach State shortstop Matt Duffy (2010) was nominated for Big West Conference Player of the Week honors. He hit .417 (5-12) with three RBIs as the Dirtbags lost 2 of 3 to Cal State Fullerton

Happy Birthday

Outfielder David Andriese of UC Riverside, who returns this summer for an encore performance with the Knights, and pitcher Nate Dolman of Mt. Hood CC will each turn 20 years of age on March 2.

Happy Birthday, guys!

Lots of Special Nights Planned

We're closing in on finalizing our promotional schedule and our best season yet is in the works. We promise there will be lots of activities - other than the game itself - to keep the kids busy and entertained.

This year's 31-game home schedule features numerous promotions geared with the younger crowd specifically in mind.

- June 25 and August 6 are $1,000 Kids Dash for Cash Nights, an opportunity for children 10 years of age and under to grab a fistful of dollars.

- Our annual July 3rd Fireworks Night, one of the best pyrotechnic displays in the region, has become a local institution. Fireworks will also follow the July 26th West Coast League All-Star Game.

- The most recognizable mascot in sports, the world-famous San Diego Chicken, will bring his zany antics to Corvallis on July 16th. The popular ZOOperstars! return to Goss Stadium on July 22nd.
