Normal CornBelters News Release

Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, opened up their home stand with a 5-3 loss to the Washington Wild Things Tuesday night at the Corn Crib.

Normal starting pitcher Tyler Lavigne (4-7) took the loss, while Washington's Justin Hall (4-7) grabbed the win. Orlando Santos pitched the ninth for the Wild Things and got his seventh save.

The Wild Things jumped on the board early. A leadoff triple by Darien Sandford came across home plate on a swinging strikeout to give Washington a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Normal responded quickly with two runs of their own. Ty Wiesemeyer scored first for the 'Belters on an RBI by Steven Felix. Pat McKenna added another run to the board after a Washington error allowed him to reach third, giving Normal the 2-1 advantage after the first inning.

Washington's Andrew Heck started off the second inning with a leadoff single and was eventually hit home by Shain Stoner, leaving the score tied at 2-2.

The Wild Things grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fifth with a solo home run by Brad Agustin,

It was Normal's turn to tie up the game in the sixth inning. Felix knocked a leadoff home run over the wall for his second RBI of the night, leaving the score at 3-3.

Washington answered the CornBelters with another run in the seventh, giving the Wild Things a 4-3 advantage.

The Wild Things added some insurance in the eighth inning as a sacrifice fly ball brought A.J. Nunziato home, leaving the score at 5-3 in Washington's favor.

That would be it, as the 'Belters would be unable to score any more runs in the last two innings.

Game two of the series will be played on Wednesday evening, starting at 6:30pm at the Corn Crib. CornBelters will put left-hander Jacob Liedka (2-8, 4.01 ERA) on the mound, facing right-hander Chris Smith (7-4, 2.85 ERA) for Washington.
