Gateway Grizzlies News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - After winning four games in a row and outscoring their opponent 35-2 during that stretch, the Gateway Grizzlies hit a bump in the road with a 5-4 loss to the Lake Erie Crushers Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark.

The loss snapped a four game winning streak for the Grizzlies and brought them only a half game ahead of the Windy City ThunderBolts.

Lake Erie (41-32) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the game's first batter, Adrian Ortiz, belted a home run to right field. After a Jason Taylor double and stolen base, Russ Moldenhauer drove him in to give the Crushers a two-run first inning lead.

Wally Correa added to the Crushers lead with an RBI double in the second inning, bringing in Robby Kuzdale, to give Lake Erie a 3-0 lead.

Gateway (43-30) tied the game up in the third inning with three runs. Jonathan Johnson reached base on an error, stole second and came around to score on a Rogelio Noris single. Hot-hitting outfielder Jon Myers capped off the Grizzlies third-inning scoring with a towering two-run home run to left field to tie the game. It was his team-leading 15th of the season.

Jerod Yakbubik gave the Grizzlies their first lead of the game in the fourth, hitting his third home run of the season to right field.

Lake Erie rallied for solo home runs in the sixth and ninth innings to score two unanswered and win the game. Andrew Davis slammed the home run in the sixth while Kuzdale proved the eventual game-winning blast in the ninth.

Brett Zawacki got the start for the Grizzlies and picked up a no-decision. Zawacki gave up four runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Zac Treece (2-1) took the loss, giving up the Kuzdale home run in the ninth inning.

First-place Gateway will return to action Wednesday night against Lake Erie at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Chris Enourato (3-3) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
