
Calhoun Pitches Eight Strong in Loss

Marion, IL - The Miners begin their nine game home stand on the wrong foot as the Rockford RiverHawks defeated the Miners 1-0 at Rent One Park on Tuesday night. RiverHawks starter Ziggie VanderWall (6-4) pitched six shut out innings in his win over the Miners. He gave up seven hits, five walks and struck out three batters. Miners starter Daniel Calhoun (5-3) pitched eight innings in his third loss of the season. He gave up three hits, one unearned run and struck out seven.
The RiverHawks scored the only run in the game in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Ted Obregon hit a lead off single then moved to second on a bunt by center fielder Brandon Anderson. Obregon stole third base but scored on a throwing error by catcher Chris Anderson. The RiverHawks would lead 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning.
Miners starter Daniel Calhoun retired 24 of the 27 batters he faced in eight innings. He gave up two hits to left fielder Michael Hur and the lead off single to Ted Obregon.
The Miners left nine men on base and had the bases loaded twice in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings but failed to score. RiverHawks reliever Andrew Armstrong pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and didn't allow a hit. Mickey Cassidy pitched .2 scoreless innings and didn't allow a hit as well.
With the loss, the Miners fell to 42-31 on the season. Rockford with the win improved to 32-41. The Miners and RiverHawks play tomorrow night at Rent One Park. The Miners will send Shawn Gilblair to the mound in search of his ninth victory as he'll be opposed by RiverHawks starter Kyle Lindquist. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
