August 9, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Normal CornBelters News Release
The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, broke a seven game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the Washington Wild Things Thursday on a chilly Thursday evening at the Corn Crib. Normal reliever Ross Davis (1-0) registered the win allowing only two hits over three and two thirds innings of shutout ball, while Casey Barnes took the loss for the Wild Things.
A three-run bomb over the wall in right by first baseman Ernie Banks Jr. brought in center fielder Ty Wiesemeyer and right fielder Steven Felix to give the 'Belters an early 3-0 advantage.
A two-out RBI single from Andrew Heck in the top of the 3rd got the Wild Things on the board as Jim Vahalik came home to score after reaching base with a leadoff walk. Two batters later Michael Bando cut the 'Belters lead to one when he crossed the plate after A.J. Nunziato was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
In the top of the 4th, Washington's Darien Sanford brought home Brad Augustin with an RBI single to tie up the game at three runs apiece.
An inning later Felix answered the Wild Thing rally with some offense for Normal, knocking an RBI double to the wall in center and bringing in Wiesemeyer, allowing the 'Belters to regain the lead at 4-3.
In the 6th it was again the 'Belters who flexed their muscles as designated hitter Sam Judah led off the inning with a triple to center. Second baseman J.B. Brown followed that with an RBI single. After a single by shortstop Andrew Cohn, catcher Trey Manz's RBI groundout brought in Brown and extended the Normal advantage to 6-3.
The 'Belters got some insurance with a run in the bottom of the 8th when Cohn collected his fourth hit of the night, this one an RBI single to center, allowing Brown to come home.
On Friday the 'Belters will continue the home stand, playing host to the River City Rascals. RHP Brenden Smith (2-4, 4.02 ERA) will take the ball for Normal, while River City's starter is TBD. Pregame begins on WJBC.com at 6:20.
CEFCU Fantastic Friday will feature the Chicago Bears mascot, Staley Da Bear!
