Rascals End Drought, Win 7-5

O'Fallon, Mo. - The River City Rascals scored seven runs in the fifth inning ending a stretch of 47 innings in which the Rascals were outscored 46-1 while ending a five game losing streak en-route to a 7-5 comeback win over the Schaumburg Boomers.

The Boomers (43-32) took an early lead, scoring a single run in the first on a Chad Mozingo single who was activated from the injured list prior to the game. He would have quite an impact the rest of the way.

Rascal starter Preston Vancil (5-8) continued to struggle after the first inning, allowing consecutive single to start the third before Mozingo pounded a pitch to right-center for a 4-0 Schaumburg lead that was stretched to 5-0 when Mozingo led off the fifth with a homerun.

River City finally got the offense rolling in the fifth when Eric Williams led off the inning with a single and scored on a Matt Serna double. A Curran Redal single in front of a Zach Deutscher hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out for Jeremy Synan who looped a single to right that wound up bringing in two after an errant throw from right field. Doug Sanders followed with a game-tying two-run double to left-center before Charlie Lisk unloaded on a pitch to center that soared over the pine trees behind the batter's eye for what would be the game-winning hit.

The Rascal bullpen took over for Vancil after five innings. Nick Kennedy tossed two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh before Jason Sullivan and Matt Costello combined to get through the eighth. Albert Ayala, acquired from Southern Illinois for Brandon Cunniff, tossed a perfect ninth for his ninth save and first for River City.

The Rascals have now outscored their opponents 7-0 over the last four innings.

River City squares off against the Normal CornBelters over the weekend at the Corn Crib with first pitch Friday night set for 6:30.
