JOLIET SLAMMERS (32-42) vs. ROAD WARRIORS (3-11)

Thursday, August 9 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #75 - Home Game #39 (32-42), (15-23)

RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (6-7, 3.71 ERA) vs. LHP #12 Jared Christensen (1-1, 3.86 ERA)

Last time out.

Joliet won 5-4 in dramatic fashion last night. The Road Warriors had a 2-0 lead through six. With runners on the corners, David Fox brought one across on a fielder's choice, and Eric McGee tied it up seconds later on a run-scoring single in the seventh. Fox later scored on a sacrifice fly from Patrick Norris to take the 3-2 lead, and Brad Netzel whacked a single for the insurance run. Ben Magsig started a rally with a one-out single in the ninth, and they loaded the bases later in the inning. Wesley Jones then lofted a sacrifice fly to put it within one, and Slammers closer Amalio Diaz fired a wild pitch past McGee allowing the tying run to score. With one away in the ninth, Norris laced a double, and Abel Nieves launched the game-winning hit into right-centerfield to secure the 5-4 walk-off win. Jim Schult had a stellar eight-inning outing, surrendering only two runs while fanning five.

For Starters.

Steven Maxwell is coming off a great start against the Schaumburg Boomers on August 3. He went eight scoreless innings, giving up only three hits while walking four and striking out three in a 2-0 win. In Maxwell's seven losses this year the Slammers have averaged two runs per game. He currently leads the team with six wins. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.

Mr. RBI.

David Fox leads the Slammers with 43 RBI on the season. He has driven in 10 over the past five games.

We're going streaking!

The Slammers' current five-game winning streak matches their longest winning streak of the season. They also won five in a row from May 29-June 2. The current five game winning streak comes on the heels of their longest losing streak of the season (also five games).

Home woes.

The Slammers have the worst home record in the Frontier League at 15-23. They are looking for their first home series sweep of the season.

Better when the game is close.

The Slammers have a record of 20-17 when the game is decided by two runs or less. They are 12-25 when the game is decided by three runs or more.

Walk this way.

Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 48 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 29 times in 251 at bats.

First inning success..

The Slammers have scored 50 runs in the first inning, most of any inning this season.

Error indicator.

Joliet is 11-30 in games when they make an error. They are 21-12 in games when they do not.
