Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
JACKSON, Tenn. - Blue Wahoos starting pitcher RHP Carlos Contreras has been placed on the disabled list because of a lower back spasm backdated to 4/27/14. Additionally, RHP Daniel Renken has been transferred to the Billings roster. In corresponding moves, RHP Justin Freeman has been added from Louisville and former Major Leaguer Elvin Ramirez has been assignment to Pensacola from the Billings roster.
Ramirez spent part of the 2012 season playing for the New York Mets. He made 20 Major League appearances that year and totaled 22 strikeouts for the Mets. He was traded to the Angels prior to the 2013 season and he split the year between Triple-A Salt Lake and Double-A Arkansas. The right-hander was 1-1 between the two stops over 49 appearances. He fanned 49 batters over 61 innings and displayed his versatility with a start and a save during the season. Ramirez signed a minor league contract with the Reds earlier in the month.
Freeman returns to Pensacola, where he played in 2012, after spending most of his 2013 season with Louisville. The Georgia native made his Major League debut with the Reds last April against the Phillies in a Reds 11-2 win. It was his only Major League outing and was transferred back to Louisville. He appeared in just six games with the Bats before getting sidelined the rest of the season with a right shoulder impingement. He had a save and allowed just 1R/ER over 7.0 innings for a 1.29 ERA with Louisville. He hasn't pitched yet in 2014.
Contreras was skipped in the rotation during the Jacksonville series and came out of his last start in Pensacola on 4/24 against Mississippi with back discomfort. He pitched just 1.2 innings in that start before exiting early. In four games this season he is 1-1 with a 3.95 ERA with 17 strikeouts. Renken has made eight appearances, all in relief, with a 4.61 ERA over 13.2 innings. He has walked 10 with 18 strikeouts.
Both Ramirez and Freeman are active and available for Wednesday's series opener against the Jackson Generals in Jackson, Tenn.
