Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons dropped game one of their five-game series against the Mobile BayBears by a score of 8-3 Wednesday night in front of 3,796 fans at Regions Field.

Micah Johnson led off the game with an infield single, went to second on a throwing error and stole third base before scoring on a base hit by Trayce Thompson to give the Barons a 1-0 lead. The steal was Johnson's team-leading eighth of the season.

The game would be all BayBears from that point forward. Mobile jumped in front in the top of the second as Jake Lamb reached base on a hit-by-pitch, went to second on a walk to Jordan Parraz and scored on a three-run home run by Sean Jamieson, taking a 3-1 lead. A two-run double by David Peralta later in the frame made it a 5-1 BayBears lead. All five runs were scored against starter Nick McCully (2-1, 3.70) who also allowed five hits and walked three over 4.0 IP.

The score would remain 5-1 until the seventh where Mobile hit back-to-back homeruns to take a 8-1 lead. The homers came from Jon Griffin, a two-run shot to dead center, and was followed by Jake Lamb's solo homer. Both home runs came against reliever Nestor Molina.

The Barons offense was held in check BayBears starter A.J. Schugel (2-0, 2.96) who allowed one run (0 earned) on three hits over 6.0 IP.

Micah Johnson finished 2-for-3 on the night with an RBI double off the wall in right-center in the 8th inning but it wasn't enough as the Barons fell by a final score of 8-3.

Rangel Ravelo extended his hitting streak to six games with a leadoff single in the seventh and finished 1-for-2 on the night with a walk.

With the loss, the Barons fell to 11-14 on the season while Mobile improved to 16-10. The Barons will look to rebound tomorrow night as they send RHP Chris Beck (2-3, 4.94) to the hill in game two against RHP Chase Anderson (3-2, 0.85). First pitch is scheduled for a 7:05 PM CDT.
