June 2, 2004 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
Lakewood, NJâ Mike Conroy knocked in four runs and wound up a double shy of hitting for the cycle in powering Lake County past Lakewood 9-7 Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Park. The Captains squared their record at 26-26, while the BlueClaws three-game win streak was halted. Lake County has won three of four from the BlueClaws with the three games having been decided by a total of four runs. Lakewood dropped to 24-26 overall and 13-9 at home.
Jake Blalock led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run, his second of the game, to pull the BlueClaws to within 9-4. It was Blalock's ninth of the season and the second time that he had hit more than one long ball in a game. Randy Ruiz singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored when right fielder Ryan Goleski misplayed Bryan Hansen's fly ball into a three-base error. Chris Klemm blasted a home run over the wall in straightaway center field to score Hansen to trim the lead to 9-7 and chase Nelson Hiraldo from the mound after 2 1/3 innings of relief work. Jim Ed Warden followed on the hill for the visitors and retired Omar Bramasco and Jose Cortez to finish off the game and earn his first save of the season.
Conroy chased home a run in the first with a fielder's choice grounder, tripled home a run in the fifth, belted a solo home run in the seventh and singled to drive in a run in the ninth. Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled and tripled in five at-bats and has now collected 11 hits in 17 at-bats against Lakewood pitching. Ricardo Rojas finished with four hits in five tries and knocked in a run, while Brandon Pinckney collected three hits, scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run.
Kyle Kendrick suffered the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander dropped to 3-6 and has been involved in the decision in each of his last five outings. Cory Schultz yielded a run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings of relief work behind Kendrick and has allowed at least one run in five straight appearances.
Ruiz has hit safely in 14 out of 15 games, while Nick Italiano lost an eight-game hitting streak after going hitless in four tries. The BlueClaws belted four home runs in a game for the second time this season and for the first time in team history at FirstEnergy Park.
The BlueClaws continue their three-game set with Lake County on Thursday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. Lakewood right-hander Erick Arteaga gets the starting assignment against Captains right-hander Adam Miller. All BlueClaws games, home and away, can be heard on 1160 WOBM AM and www.sportsjuice.com. Coverage of Thursday's game will begin at 11:50 a.m.
