Conforto Only Comfort in 2-0 Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets were held to a season-low two hits in their 2-0 loss to the Trenton Thunder Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton wasted a strong start from Luis Cessa, who allowed one run in 7-2/3 innings, while matching a season-high with eight strikeouts. Michael Conforto had both B-Met hits, while the rest of the lineup went 0-for-26.

It's the first time Binghamton's been swept this season, as they were held scoreless over the final 13 innings of the series.

Cessa's lone mistake came to lead off the second inning, when Gary Sanchez hit a towering home run to left-center. It was the catcher's seventh home run of the year, as Trenton scored first in all three games. The righty would later retire 15 in a row, facing the minimum over five consecutive innings.

Binghamton got a one out double from Conforto in the first inning, before Trenton's Caleb Smith retired the next 11 batters he faced. Smith allowed one hit in his 6 2/3 innings, as Binghamton stranded a single baserunner in the first, fifth and seventh innings. The B-Mets had just one at-bat in the game with a runner in scoring position.

Trenton added an insurance run in the ninth inning, when a Gavin Cecchini error allowed Aaron Judge to reach to begin the frame. Eric Jagielo then singled Judge to third and Sanchez drove him in on a fielder's choice ground out to second.

Connor Mullee was the first man out of the Thunder bullpen, setting down all four B-Mets he faced. James Pazos then came on in the ninth for his first save opportunity.

After striking out the first two batters, Conforto singled down the left field line to extend the ninth inning. It was his second hit of the night and Binghamton's first since the first inning. Josh Rodriguez, and his league-leading 10 home runs, came to the plate as the tying run, but Pazos was able to get a 95 mile an hour fastball past his swing, striking out the side.

Binghamton lost all three games in the series by two runs, getting the tying run to the plate after the seventh inning in all three nights.

Cessa (4-4) suffered the tough luck loss, allowing a run in 7 2/3 innings. He faced only two batters from the stretch, striking out both of them. Smith (3-3) got the win, throwing 6 2/3 one-hit innings. Pazos earned his first save, striking out the side in the ninth inning.

The B-Mets (26-27) continue their homestand by welcoming in Reading Friday night for a three game series. RHP Michael Fulmer (1-0, 2.63) gets the start for Binghamton, against LHP Jesse Biddle (4-1, 4.50). POSTGAME NOTES: The B-Mets are under .500 for the first time since beginning the year 0-1...Gavin Cecchini's 12 errors have led to nine unearned runs...Luis Cessa's 7-2/3 innings pitched were the most for a B-Met starter since Greg Peavey went eight innings against New Britain, 8/28/14...it's the fewest hits the B-Mets have collected in a game since they were one-hit by the Portland Sea Dogs on July 9, 2014
