Confident Bullfrogs Try to Sweep Mallards
June 14, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- Last night's 8-1 win was quite the way to welcome in new Bullfrog, outfielder Logan Taylor (Louisville). Now they will look to repeat against a struggling Mallards team who has only two wins in their last ten contests.
The Bullfrogs bats racked up 14 hits yesterday, their second highest total of the season (17 on 05/28). The eight runs was also the seventh time they had plated seven runs or more in a game. And everyone contributed. Eight of the nine in the starting lineup had at least one hit, as the Bullfrogs forced the Mallards to go to the Bullpen in the fourth inning.
Left-handers, Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) and Tyler McDowell (Washington State) have developed as formidable and reliable middle-of-the-order forces. In 28 at-bats, McDowell has 15 hits and eight runs scored. Donovan leads the club with 2HR/16RBI/.429 OBP. These two had five hits against Madison Saturday.
The seven run margin of victory was also the Bullfrogs' highest, indicating another solid pitching performance. Ryan Radue (Connecticut) battled through three walks to manage four innings, two hits, and one run. The final five innings were spotless thanks to Ben Messenger (UW-Oshkosh), Connor Donovan (Lehigh), Sam Brunner (Dayton), and Jeremy Graf (Flagler).
A key storyline in the future of Green Bay's success will be the depth of the bullpen, and if they can reel in middle-relief work like they did in last night's win the Bullfrogs will be a tough opponent for any team down the road.
And even when the Mallards threatened in innings five through seven, the Bullfrogs spun three consecutive double plays to end the frames. An errorless night, along with excellent middle infield glove work by Ty Blankmeyer (St. John's) and Jack Strunc (Washington State) is a preview of more to come.
Although the Mallards have been struggling, lefty Matt Bower (Washington State) is one guy who could pick them up. Just ask the Houston Astros who selected him in this year's draft he can be dominant at times.
Bower pitches against the Bullfrogs having already started against them earlier this season on June 3rd. In five innings he allowed three hits and struck out 10 with no free passes. In 13 total innings, Bower has surrendered just a single run.
Madison's offense has welcomed back Chris Tschida (Western Illinois) after being hit by a batted ball in early June. And new insert Mikey Diekroeger (Stanford) gives the Mallards more depth in a scuffling order.
After coming out of the bullpen in Saturday's loss, the Bullfrogs will also await Anthony Gonsolin's (St. Mary's) placement back in the lineup. In three games, Gonsolin is 3-for-10 against the Bullfrogs.
Today's game is the last time these two teams meet until July 30-31. It is Luxemburg Pet Clinic's "Bark In The Park" day where fans can bring their own pups to the stadium for the ballgame. Stay for the post-game because David "The Bullet" Smith will be launching himself out of a cannon in his "Human Cannonball" performance.
Single game tickets are on sale now. Visit www.greenbaybullfrogs.com to purchase tickets. The Bullfrogs' business hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
