Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - In the finale of a two-game road set at Joannes Stadium, the Madison Mallards (9-10) were defeated by the Green Bay Bullfrogs (8-8) by a final score of 7-2 Sunday afternoon. The Mallards went a combined 2-for-30 at the plate and allowed Green Bay to tally double-digit base knocks for the second time in as many games, ultimately proving to be the deciding factor in the losing effort.
Madison pieced together an efficient start to the game in the top of the first, an inning that saw Anthony Gonsolin (St. Mary's College) reach base via walk and advance all the way to third base on two consecutive wild pitches. Mallards third baseman Mikey Diekroeger (Stanford) promptly came through with a run-producing ground out to second base, giving field manager Donnie Scott and company a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame.
But the Bullfrogs bats exploded for four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, tagging Mallards starting pitcher Matt Bower (Washington State) with four earned runs from the get-go. Three more hits in the bottom of the third inning put Green Bay in position to plate two more runs, and by the end of the three, Madison found itself down 6-1. Bower exited the game having allowed six earned runs on seven hits across 2.2 innings.
Gonsolin did what he could to catalyze Madison's lineup later in the game, lacing a home run over the left center wall in the top of the sixth to trim Green Bay's lead to 6-2. The Bullfrogs neutralized Gonsolin's blast in the bottom of the same frame, however, courtesy of Ryan Donovan's (Hofstra) triple that scored Tyler McDowell (Washington State). Unable to notch a hit off Green Bay pitching in the seventh, eighth or ninth frames, the Mallards fell by a score of 7-2.
With his outpouring of offense, the Ho-Chunk Gaming 'Big Win' Player of the Night was Gonsolin, who went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, one walk, one run batted in and his second home run of the season. The 6-foot-2, dual-threat pitcher and outfielder now owns team-bests marks in home runs and on-base-plus-slugging percentage (.835) this summer.
Madison's longest road swing continues Monday against the Battle Creek Bombers (8-10). Tomorrow's contest, scheduled for 6:05 p.m., is the first of a two-game set between South Division foes.
