Bakersfield Condors News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - the Bakersfield Condors (23-9-2-0, 48 points) overcame a third-period deficit to down the Ontario Reign (14-18-3-3, 34 points) 2-1 in a shootout in front of 5,314 at Citizens Business Bank Arena Wednesday night.
The Condors and Reign found themselves in familiar territory, tied 0-0 in a defensive battle through the first period. The two clubs combined for just 13 shots on goal, with Bakersfield holding a 9-4 advantage, while not a single penalty was called. The Condors started G Timo Pielmeier, while the Reign countered with G Curtis Darling.
The offense didn't pick up in the second frame, either, although the Reign took the lead. F Greg Hogeboom notched the first goal of the game, from the bottom of the left circle, at 14:44, scoring his 19th of the season. Tempers flared 8:30 in, when a flurry of infractions were whistled, with F Matt McCue and RW Erick Lizon accumulating fighting majors, leading to a two-man Reign advantage and the only penalties of the game. Shots were only 15-10 after two periods.
Bakersfield had their chances to tie the game up, earning several third period power plays. And with 4:20 remaining D Mark Mitera connected. The rookie rifled home his 2nd of the season on a 4-on-3 advantage to tie it up 1-1. The Condors dodged a bullet as regulation closed, when they were called for a penalty with less than a minute remaining, but killed it off.
Neither club could end it in the overtime period, though the Reign had two power plays. In the shootout the Condors received goals by D Sasha Pokulok and F Matheiu Aubin, while Pielmeier was a perfect 4-for-4.
