Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors, official ECHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, announced today they have signed rookie F Matt Pope and LW Tyrel Lucas (LOO-kuhs). The announcement was made by Head Coach Marty Raymond.
Pope, 24, has spent the last four years at Bemidji State University (College Hockey America), where he skated in 143 games and totaled 71 points (33g, 38a) and 126 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pound Langley, British Columbia, native posted a career-high 14 goals and 23 points in his senior campaign last year. Pope received Academic All-CHA honors in his sophomore and junior seasons, and was dubbed CHA Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 28, 2008 during his senior year.
Lucas, 24, played his first pro season with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in the Central Hockey League last season. In 60 games with the Mudbugs, Lucas notched 42 points (25g, 17a) and 47 penalty minutes, leading all Bossier-Shreveport rookies in goals, assists and points. He also added three goals in just four playoff games to tie for the team lead.
Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound native of Williams Lake, British Columbia, played two seasons at the University of Calgary (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) from 2005-2007, during which he skated in 78 games, totaling 49 points (20g, 29a) and 68 penalty minutes. His collegiate career followed three seasons of junior hockey in the Western Hockey League, including stints with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Calgary Hitmen and Prince George Cougars. In his junior career, Lucas racked up 100 points (38g, 62a) and 98 penalty minutes in 199 games.
Pope and Lucas become the 14th and 15th players on the Condors roster for 2008-09, joining D Scott Balan, C Dave Bonk, D Martin Frechette, G Yutaka Fukufuji, RW Liam Huculak, F Andrew Ianiero, D Chris Kaufman, F Tylor Michel, F Dale Reinhardt, LW Dany Roussin, C Ryan Salvis, D Tyler Scott and D Kevin Truelson.
What Marty Raymond says:
"These are both two very good young players," said Raymond. "Both have a knack for scoring and play with a little grit. In addition, Pope came highly recommended out of college and will be attending an American League training camp before he joins us."
