Comeback Ruined in Ninth

Leading by one run and with three outs to get the Calgary Vipers gave up four runs and were defeated 10-7 by the Tucson Toros at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning the Vipers rallied and scored four runs in the seventh to tie the game before taking the lead in the eighth frame. In the ninth though six straight hits by the Toros put them back in front for good. With the loss the Snakes' seven game winning streak was snapped and they are now 17-7 on the second half of the season. Still four games up in first place in the North Division Calgary's overall Golden Baseball League record is 40-27.

Claudio Galva (2-3) took the loss after entering the ninth inning with a one-run lead and giving up six hits for four runs without retiring an out. Monte Mansfield had been in line for the win after getting out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh and posting a scoreless eighth inning.

Kevin Price led the way at the plate by going two-for-three with two hit by pitches and three runs batted in.

Tucson started the scoring in the top of the first inning as Ron Perodin doubled and scored on a Cristobal Santana run batted in single for a 1-0 advantage.

The Toros opened the game up in the third when Ryan Priddy and Lino Garcia singled, Francisco Plasencia walked to load the bases, Priddy scored on a wild pitch, Wally Backman Jr. knocked in one with a base hit while a second run scored on a throwing error by right fielder Jonny Kaplan, and Jose Valdez also singled in a tally for a four-run frame and a 5-0 lead.

Calgary scored in the bottom of the sixth inning as Brent Metheny and Julio Ramirez walked, Kevin Price doubled for a RBI, and Drew Miller drove in a run with a ground ball for a 5-2 score.

Tucson got a run back in the seventh when Santana singled, Luis Apodaca was hit by a pitch, Valdez singled to load the bases, and Perodin walked for a RBI and a 6-2 advantage.

The Vipers tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Kaplan singled, Metheny and Ramirez walked to load the bases, Price singled in one, Miller hit a sacrifice fly for another, and with two outs and two strikes Luis Taveras hit a two-run double for a 6-6 score.

Calgary took their first lead in the bottom of the eight when Dillon O'Krane singled, Kaplan doubled, and with two outs Ramirez walked to load the bases, followed by a Price RBI hit by pitch for a 7-6 advantage.

Six straight hits gave the Toros back the lead in the ninth frame as Valdez singled, Josh Womack doubled, followed by Perodin, Priddy, Garcia, and Plasencia RBI base hits for a 10-7 lead.

The Vipers now welcome the St. George RoadRunners to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for a four game series on Saturday August 14th at 5:05 PM with Zoo at the Park Day, Sunday August 15th at 12:35 PM MDT for Team Photo Giveaway, and Monday August 16th and Tuesday August 17th with both games starting at 7:05 PM MDT.
