Victoria Seals News Release
The Victoria Seals continued their three game set with game two against the St. George Roadrunners in a Thursday night contest at Royal Athletic Park. Taking to the mound for Victoria was Jeff Duda (3-3), who matched up against Alex Foltz (0-0) for St. George.
St. George opened the scoring in the top of the first, with a single, a walk, a triple, and a sacrifice fly. Matt Huggins hit a bases clearing, two run triple, followed by a sacrifice fly from Chris Nastasi to take an early 3-0 advantage.
The Roadrunners would add to their lead in the second. After a wild pitch advanced Jason Cramer to second, Christian Garcia hit a two-out single to score the runner and give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
Victoria added runs of their own in the second frame thanks to the bats of Matt Edgecombe and Wilver Perez. After Matt Kavanaugh drew a walk and advanced to third off of an error, Edgecombe hit an RBI infield single to score the Seals' catcher. Duda then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Colin Moro and Edgecombe into scoring position. Perez followed with a two-run double to the warning track that was just missed by the diving centre fielder, Christian Garcia, to make it a one run contest.
Adding another run in the third inning were the Roadrunners, when Kyle Obal hit an RBI single to score first baseman Matt Huggins, and chase Seals' starting pitcher Duda from the game, with a 5-3 advantage.
The Seals battled back in the fifth, to take their first lead of the game. Terrence McClain hit an RBI double into left field to score Henry Calderon, who beat the throw at the plate. Kavanaugh added another double for the home side to score McClain and Tim Rodriguez for the 6-5 advantage, ending the night of St. George starter, Foltz. Extending their lead in the sixth, Victoria took a 7-5 advantage when Perez stole his record-breaking 52nd base of the season. With the crowd still on their feet, McClain notched an RBI double to deep centre field off of reliever Ken Luongo to send Perez home from second for the two-run Seals' lead.
Victoria kept the runs coming in the bottom half of the eighth, thanks using a single from Perez, followed by another stolen base ahead of an RBI single from McClain, and a two-run home run from Rodriguez for a commanding 10-5 advantage.
Chris Bodishbaugh picked up his first win of the season putting in 2.1 innings of work, allowing one hit, while retiring four. Alex Foltz recorded the loss for St. George, giving up six runs and nine hits in 4.2 innings of play. Terrence McClain powered the Seals' offence going 4-for-5 with two RBI's, while Matt Huggins provided the scoring for the Roadrunners in a losing effort, going 3-for-5 with two RBI's.
