Chico Battles Back To Beat Caps

August 13, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

The Edmonton Capitals had the Chico Outlaws right where they wanted them after the first inning on Thursday night at TELUS Field, but the visitors slowly clawed their way back to post a 6-4 come-from-behind victory.

The Caps got off to a torrid start in the third game of the four-game series against the Outlaws, driving four runs across the plate in the first inning. But just as they proved the previous two games - both Chico wins - the Outlaws' offence was potent, scoring once in the fourth, three times in the fifth and twice in the seventh to win it.

"That's just the way the game has been going for us lately - it seems like we can't get any luck," Caps right fielder Tom Collaro said of the tough loss. "We got off to a great start tonight and the later innings hurt us. This is a big homestand if we want to have a shot at playoffs, so hopefully our luck starts to turn around."

Collaro went 3-for-5 with a run scored in the defeat, while first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh drove in his league-leading 74th run, which just happened to be centre fielder Ryan Stevenson, who crossed the plate for the 64th time this season - also good enough for first place in the Golden Baseball League. The Caps loaded the bases in the ninth inning but were unable to score.

Left fielder J.J. Sherrill delivered the biggest blow for the Outlaws in the fifth, as he stroked a two-run double to tie the game, setting the team up for two more runs in the seventh. Caps starter Lou Pote cruised through the first three innings but ended up with the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

The Caps (10-13) host the Outlaws (12-10) for one more game on Friday at 7 p.m. at TELUS, before welcoming the Tucson Toros (10-15) to Edmonton for a four-game series running Saturday through Tuesday.

Thursday's game was another edition of 4 for $44 Thursday, as fans were able to purchase four tickets to the game, four hot dogs and four Pepsi products for just $44. And Friday night's game will be even more explosive, literally, as it's another Safeway Fireworks Friday, with a dazzling fireworks display scheduled for right after the game.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
