
Columbus Vanquishes Mississippi Surge in Shootout, 3-2

Andy Willigar scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Columbus Cottonmouths picked up the extra point in a 3-2 (2-0 SO) win over Mississippi Surge.
The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Columbus' other shootout goal was scored by Willigar. The Cottonmouths came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Columbus trailed 2-0 after a goal by Mississippi Surge's Evan Zych at 19:41 in the second period. The Cottonmouths knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Matt Gingera at 14:03 in the third period.
Columbus' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Mississippi Surge power plays.
Jason Gray also scored for Columbus. In addition, Columbus received assists from Andre Herman and Dan Bremner, who contributed one each.
Mississippi Surge excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Mississippi Surge's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put 16 shots on net during the game. The 34 shots that Mississippi Surge put on net surpassed Mississippi Surge's average of 16.3 shots per game this season.
Mississippi Surge was helped by Trever Hertz, who finished with one goal. Hertz scored 4:18 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi Surge. Kyle Kudroch assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Nicholas Kuqali and Justin MacDonald, who each chipped in one.
Andrew Loewen made 32 saves for the Cottonmouths on 34 shots. Columbus incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Mathieu Dugas recorded 22 saves for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
