BLOOMINGTON - The Bloomington Thunder scored first but fell in a defensive battle to the Southern Professional Hockey League-leading Pensacola Ice Flyers 2-1 on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
After a scoreless opening period, the Thunder scored 2:05 into the second frame on a Curtis Megginson drive from the high slot when he collected a rebound from a wraparound attempt by Mike Henderson also assisted by Harry Mahesh. The Ice Flyers tied the contest with 13:44 left in the second period when Adam Pawlick scored on a low drive that found daylight inside the left post. Pawlick forced a turnover to feed Ryan Salvis for a left circle wrister with 2:16 showing before the second intermission for a 2-1 Ice Flyers lead.
The Thunder emptied their net for an extra attacker for the final 1:15, but could not find the tying goal. B.J. O'Brien stopped 49 Pensacola shots in the loss while Ross MacKinnon took the win with 34 saves. Neither team collected a power play goal with three chances given to the Ice Flyers and four opportunities awarded to the Thunder.
